With my undergrad background in computer science and electronics, and my PH.D. work in image processing and computer vision, and some real-world product development experience at Pure Software in the 1990s, I’m well set up for my current role leading product development for Netflix, as we transition our business into Internet-delivered  video.

Some of the interesting problems I seek to solve include:

• Personalization: understanding what to suggest to users based upon their implicit and explicit taste inputs, to maximize their enjoyment, and derive value from niche content; the cool thing is that niche content – when well matched – often generates highest satisfaction, but also the lowest costs.
• Delivery: sending high quality video “over-the-top” at volume, using technology to bridge congested non-dedicated delivery pipes.
• Scale: doing more of it every quarter

Personal

I am a cross-country skier, and competed on the US National Ski Orienteering team in 2009.  I also cycle, hike (especially in the mountains), and occasionally swim.

I like photography, especially nature photography and macro work with alpine wildflowers.
